In ancient Kemet, Sirius was known as Sopdet, and her symbolism later became closely intertwined with Aset (Isis).
Her first visible reappearance before dawn heralded a season connected with the life-giving inundation of the Nile, the regeneration of the land and Wepet Renpet—the Opening of the Year.
This year, our astronomical calculation places the predicted heliacal rising of Sirius at the Giza Plateau on August 7, 2026—one day before our August 8 gathering.

When the Star Returns
For the ancient Egyptians, the return of Sopdet was more than an astronomical occurrence.
After disappearing into the radiance of the Sun, Sirius eventually became visible once again upon the eastern horizon shortly before dawn.
Her return heralded the season of the Nile’s life-giving inundation—the sacred waters upon which the fertility and abundance of the land depended.
The star returned.
The waters rose.
The Black Land was renewed.
And a new sacred cycle began.
This Opening of the Year was known as Wepet Renpet.
Yet the heliacal rising of Sirius does not occur everywhere on the same day.
It is a place-based celestial event whose calculated timing and actual visibility depend upon location, elevation, atmospheric clarity and the conditions of the eastern horizon.
Our astronomical calculation places the predicted heliacal rising of Sirius at the Giza Plateau on August 7, 2026.

Where Lions Gate and
Wepet Renpet Meet
The contemporary Lions Gate Portal and the ancient Egyptian observance of Wepet Renpet are not the same tradition.
The modern Lions Gate is associated with August 8, the Sun in Leo, the brilliance of Sirius and the numerological resonance of 8:8.
Wepet Renpet arose within the sacred cosmology of ancient Kemet and was connected with the renewal of the year, the return of the Nile’s life-giving waters and the restoration of cosmic harmony.
Yet this year, they meet within a beautiful celestial window of renewal, sovereignty and sacred remembrance.
Within our ceremony, we will honor this meeting place while remaining rooted in the ancient wisdom of Sopdet, Aset, the Nile, Wepet Renpet and Ma’at.
