A Kemetic Perspective on Aset, the Spiritual Sun & Soul Remembrance

"The stars do not ask us to become someone new. They invite us to remember what has always lived within us."

There are moments in life when, only in retrospect, the threads reveal themselves.

Looking back on the past few weeks, we are struck by the quiet poetry of the journey.

Our Smai Tawi initiation was intentionally timed to begin on the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year, when the Sun reaches its annual peak and the Earth is bathed in its greatest light.

For thirteen immersive days, our teacher, Neter Aunkh Aakhu, guided us through an ancient Kemetic path of discipline, devotion, and embodied practice. He often reminded us that this was not simply a training.

It was an initiation.

In beautiful divine timing, our final day coincided with the opening of the Sirius Gateway.

We began our initiation beneath the year's greatest light...

...and completed it as the Sirius Gateway opened.

Somewhere between those two celestial thresholds, something profound had shifted.

Or perhaps more truthfully...

Something within us had been remembered.

What Is the Sirius Gateway?

Each year between July 4–7, many spiritual traditions honor what has come to be known as the Sirius Gateway—a period when our Sun forms its annual conjunction with Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky.

For many, this celestial alignment symbolizes illumination, renewal, soul remembrance, and spiritual awakening.

In many contemporary spiritual traditions, Sirius is also regarded as our "Spiritual Sun"—a symbol of higher consciousness, divine wisdom, and the soul's journey toward remembrance.

The physical Sun nourishes life upon the Earth.

The Spiritual Sun reminds us of the light that nourishes the soul.

Although Sirius itself is hidden from view during this conjunction, the gateway has come to represent an invitation to pause, listen deeply, and reconnect with the wisdom already living within us.

Whether one approaches this alignment through astronomy, astrology, symbolism, or spiritual practice, the invitation remains beautifully simple:

What within you is ready to be remembered?

Sirius in Ancient Kemet

To the ancient Egyptians, Sirius was known as Sopdet.

It was one of the most revered stars in the heavens.

Its annual heliacal rising—the first visible appearance of Sirius before sunrise after a period hidden by the Sun's light—coincided with the life-giving flooding of the Nile. This sacred event heralded renewal, abundance, and eventually became associated with the Egyptian New Year.

Over time, Sopdet became closely associated with Aset (Isis)—the Great Mother, Divine Magician, healer, and embodiment of wisdom, devotion, and resurrection.

Aset reminds us that true healing is not about becoming someone else.

It is about remembering the wholeness that has always existed within.

A Journey of Remembrance

Just days before this year's Sirius Gateway, we completed thirteen days immersed in Smai Tawi in Jamaica.

Before dawn each morning, we gathered on the shores of the Caribbean, greeting the rising sun through meditation, breath, and Tjef Sema Paut Neteru—"Moving in Union in the Company of the Gods and Goddesses."

Far more than movement, this sacred ritual practice is a living meditation.

A way of allowing the body itself to become prayer.

A way of remembering our own divine nature.

Throughout the initiation, one realization continued to deepen.

The path was not asking us to become something new.

It was inviting us to remember what had always been present beneath the layers of forgetting.

Returning to the Mother

Our journey carried another beautiful thread.

When we arrived in Jamaica, Venus and Jupiter were joined together in Cancer—a celestial alignment often associated with home, ancestry, belonging, and the nurturing wisdom of the feminine lineage.

We spent those sacred days in St. Ann's Parish, the birthplace of Heather's paternal grandmother.

Although Heather has visited Jamaica many times throughout her life, this was the first time spending an extended period immersed in this particular parish.

Looking back, it feels as though the land itself was quietly inviting us into a deeper remembrance of ancestry, belonging, and the Divine Mother.

The Body as Temple

One of the greatest gifts of Smai Tawi is the understanding that the body is not separate from the spiritual path.

It is the temple through which we come to know it.

This realization has quietly transformed how we understand all of the work we offer through Black Swan Temple.

Sacred Sound.

Ceremony.

Breath.

Movement.

Meditation.

Pilgrimage.

They are not separate paths.

They are different expressions of the same invitation:

To remember the sacred already living within us.

Walking the Path

As these teachings continue to integrate, we look forward to sharing how this ancient lineage naturally weaves itself into our Moon Ceremonies, Mystical Alchemy of Transformation Retreats on Maui, Reiki Initiation Retreats, Sacred Egypt Pilgrimages, and future offerings.

Not as something new.

But as a deeper embodiment of wisdom that has quietly guided our work all along.
