The Heliacal Rising of Sirius & the Sacred Season of Wepet Renpet

There are moments when the heavens invite us to look up—and, in looking up, to remember something within ourselves.

The return of Sirius before dawn is one of those moments.

On July 31, 2026, our astronomical calculation placed the predicted heliacal rising of Sirius here on Maui.

The morning arrived beneath a blanket of clouds, and we did not attempt to observe the eastern horizon. We therefore share July 31 as the date indicated by our calculation—not as a personally witnessed sighting.

Perhaps there is a teaching even within this.

The star may be present before we can see her.

The new cycle may already be stirring before its shape becomes clear.

Something may be returning to our lives quietly, concealed for a time within the radiance of a greater light.

What Is a Heliacal Rising?

A heliacal rising is the first visible appearance of a star in the eastern sky shortly before sunrise, following a period in which it has been hidden within the brilliance of the Sun.

Astronomical calculations can predict when the conditions for this appearance may occur. Yet the moment of actual visibility depends upon many earthly factors: geographic location, elevation, atmospheric clarity and the openness of the eastern horizon.

This means that the heliacal rising of Sirius does not occur everywhere on the same day.

Our calculation placed the predicted rising here on Maui on July 31, 2026.

For the Giza Plateau, our calculation places it on August 7, 2026.

As on Maui, the actual visibility of Sirius from Giza will depend upon the atmospheric conditions and clarity of the eastern horizon that morning.

Sirius does not return everywhere at once.

Her light moves across the Earth like a wave of celestial remembrance—appearing beneath different horizons on different mornings.

Sopdet and the Opening of the Year

In ancient Kemet, the star we call Sirius was known as Sopdet.

Her annual reappearance before dawn became associated with a season of profound renewal. It corresponded with the anticipated inundation of the Nile—the life-giving waters upon which the fertility, nourishment and continuity of the land depended.

The star returned.

The sacred waters rose.

The Black Land was renewed.

And another cycle began.

This season of renewal became associated with Wepet Renpet—the Opening of the Year.

Sopdet was eventually closely intertwined with Aset (Isis), the great mother, healer, throne and keeper of sacred wisdom. Through this relationship, the returning star came to carry not only the promise of the Nile’s renewal, but the mysteries of regeneration, restoration and life arising again.

The return of Sopdet reminds us that renewal does not begin with urgency.

It begins with relationship.

Relationship with the heavens.

Relationship with the waters.

Relationship with the land.

Relationship with the truth within our own hearts.

The Wisdom of the Threshold

Modern culture often encourages us to move quickly from one aspiration to another.

We are urged to decide what we want, set the goal and begin manifesting the next vision—sometimes before we have fully honored what is ending.

Yet the ancient rhythm offers another way.

Before the waters rise, the land waits.

Before the seed opens, it rests within the darkness.

Before a new cycle can be consciously entered, space must be created to receive it.

Wepet Renpet invites us to pause at the threshold.

To recognize what has reached its natural completion.

To offer gratitude for what has brought us here.

To release what no longer belongs within the cycle ahead.

To clear the inner waters.

And to return ourselves to Ma’at—truth, balance, harmony and right relationship.

This is not a passive pause.

It is sacred preparation.

Ma’at Before Momentum

There is a great difference between moving forward because we feel pressured to create and moving forward because our actions have become aligned with truth.

When we begin from urgency, we may carry the patterns of the previous cycle into the next.

When we begin from Ma’at, we create from a more harmonious foundation.

And so, within this season, we may ask:

What has reached its natural completion?

What am I ready to release with gratitude?

Where is greater truth being requested in my life?

What relationship is asking to be restored to greater balance?

What is my body asking me to remember?

What intention is quietly rising within me for the cycle ahead?

There is nothing to force.

Like Sopdet approaching the horizon, the next vision may first appear as a glimmer—a subtle knowing, a returning desire or a truth we can no longer ignore.

Our work is not to summon the star before she is ready to appear.

Our work is to prepare ourselves to receive her light.

Where Lions Gate and Wepet Renpet Meet

The contemporary Lions Gate Portal and the ancient Egyptian observance of Wepet Renpet are not the same tradition.

The modern Lions Gate is associated with August 8, the Sun moving through Leo, the brilliance of Sirius and the numerological symbolism of 8:8.

Wepet Renpet emerged from the sacred cosmology and seasonal rhythms of ancient Kemet. It was connected with the renewal of the year, the life-giving waters of the Nile and the restoration of cosmic harmony.

We believe it is important to honor this distinction.

And yet, in 2026, these two streams meet within a beautiful celestial window.

Our calculation places the predicted heliacal rising of Sirius at the Giza Plateau on August 7. On August 8, we will gather within the contemporary Lions Gate observance—one day after the calculated Giza rising—to honor the season of Sopdet’s return and consciously prepare for the cycle ahead.

We will enter this meeting place through the living wisdom of Sopdet, Aset, Wepet Renpet and Ma’at.

Not to force manifestation.

Not to command the future.

But to restore the inner conditions through which a more harmonious future can emerge.
