The Living Lineage of Sacred Remembrance 

"I came but to remember."

There are women whose names become larger than history.

Not because we know everything about them.

But because, century after century, they continue to awaken something within us.

On July 22, we honor the Feast Day of Mary Magdalene.

For many, she is remembered as the first witness to the Resurrection.

For others, she is the Apostle to the Apostles.

For us, she is something more.

She is a living invitation to remember.

A Living Lineage

Our understanding of Mary Magdalene has been profoundly shaped by the lineages in which we have been blessed to walk.

As ordained clergy of the Temple of Isis, ordained Essene ministers, and most recently as initiates into the Smai Tawi (Kemetic Yoga) tradition, we have inherited a way of seeing that extends beyond history into living spiritual practice.

Within the Temple of Isis, Mary Magdalene is honored as part of the living Isis lineage. Alongside Sophia, she is revered as a bearer of the Divine Feminine Mysteries, and there is a dedicated Isium devoted to her wisdom and presence.

Within the Essene tradition, we contemplate Mary Magdalene and Yeshua as participants in a stream of mystical wisdom rooted in healing, prayer, purification, sacred service, and direct communion with the Divine. Many within these traditions understand them as carrying forward teachings that resonate deeply with the ancient mystery schools and the contemplative path of the Essenes.

Our recent initiation into the Smai Tawi (Kemetic Yoga) lineage has only deepened this understanding. Through the teachings of ancient Kemet, we continue to discover profound threads connecting sacred embodiment, hekau (sacred utterance), breath, devotion, and remembrance—threads that we also recognize within the lives and teachings of Aset, Sophia, Mary Magdalene, and Yeshua.

For us, these are not separate traditions.

They are different branches of the same ancient tree.

Each invites us to remember the Divine already present within us and to embody that remembrance through the way we live, serve, and love.

The Sacred Thread

For many years, we've returned to the sacred relationship between Aset, Mary Magdalene, and Sophia.

Though they appear in different cultures and traditions, we experience them as luminous expressions of the Divine Feminine—calling humanity toward healing, remembrance, sacred service, and embodied love.

This isn't simply an idea we study.

It is a path we walk.

It has shaped our ceremonies, our pilgrimages to Egypt, our prayer, our teaching, and the work of Black Swan Temple itself.

Again and again, these great teachers point toward the same timeless invitation:

Remember who you are.

The Alabaster Jar

One image has remained with us over the years.

Mary Magdalene carrying an alabaster vessel filled with precious oil.

In the ancient world, oils were never simply fragrance.

They were medicine.

Consecration.

Healing.

Blessing.

Throughout ancient Egypt, sacred oils were used in temple ritual, healing ceremonies, and initiatory practices. Alabaster vessels protected these precious preparations, making Mary's anointing one of the most enduring images of sacred devotion.

Perhaps that is why this image continues to speak so deeply today.

Love always finds a way to pour itself out.

The Courage to Remain

One of the qualities we love most about Mary Magdalene is not what she said.

It is where she stayed.

She remained at the cross.

She remained through grief.

She returned to the tomb before sunrise.

And because she remained...

she became the first witness to resurrection.

There is a profound teaching hidden within that story.

Transformation often asks us to stay present long enough for love to reveal what fear cannot see.

Sometimes the greatest spiritual practice is simply remaining.

Sacred Remembrance

Over these past weeks, one phrase has echoed again and again throughout our Temple.

"I came but to remember."

We first encountered these words during our Cancer New Moon gathering devoted to Aset.

They have continued to unfold through our recent Kemetic Yoga initiation, our contemplation of the Renaissance Alignment, and now, as we honor Mary Magdalene.

Perhaps remembrance isn't about recovering forgotten information.

Perhaps it is remembering the love we were created to embody.

Remembering our wholeness.

Remembering our courage.

Remembering the quiet wisdom that has never left us.

An Invitation

As we celebrate the Feast Day of Mary Magdalene, perhaps the question isn't simply,

"Who was Mary Magdalene?"

Perhaps the deeper question is,

"What is she inviting us to remember?"

If we listen carefully...

the answer may not arrive as words.

It may arrive as a softening.

A release.

A quiet knowing.

A deeper willingness to love.

For us, this is not simply a subject of study.

It is a path we have been privileged to walk.

Through our ordination in the Temple of Isis, our formation within the Essene tradition, our recent initiation into Smai Tawi (Kemetic Yoga), and our pilgrimages to Egypt, the stories of Aset, Sophia, Mary Magdalene, and Yeshua have become living companions on our journey.

They continue to invite us into a deeper remembrance—not only of who they were, but of who we are called to become.

Perhaps this is the true gift of the Feast Day of Mary Magdalene.

Not simply to remember her...

but to remember ourselves.
